The cookie cutters – The Linguist and The Architect

This is the beginning of the series of the people that inspire me. Very inspiring people, from bosses, friend, enemies, family and even those people that I see on TV, surround me. They do impact certain aspects of my life. I would explain who they are and what they do and what they have done that inspires me.

Let us start with “Mum & Dad”, here I call them the Linguist and the Architect. Mother majored in English for the tertiary education. Father is an architect with civil engineering education background.

Since, I was small, I was made to study English by the Linguist, with any chances starting from singing Karaoke “Que Sera Sera” and the “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” when I was 6 and the “must attend” English classes in the afternoon (when everybody was probably taking afternoon nap). The Linguist really does inspire me since she speaks English, Indonesian and Chinese well. She inspires me to learn different languages and there is a list of many other languages that I would like to learn well in the future. In fact if not because of her futuristic vision, I would not be speaking one of the most difficult languages to learn, the Chinese language. She said that China is going to be powerful country and Chinese language is going to be a very influential language in the world. This was her vision in 2000 and she is right. She made us (brother, sister and I) to come to China in 2001 and learn Chinese properly intensively with the “Newspaper Reading”, “Conversation”, “Calligraphy” and so many other classes listed in the program. It was not without much difficulty but we made it through.

The Architect builds buildings and he has a group of engineers and builders to visualize his visions. He designs in his drawing board and he constantly speaks with drawings. He has great color combination skills. He has great taste for art, lighting and interior design. He creates certain atmosphere in his buildings. Very creative is the Architect. He is a dreamer very similar to me. He has very much entrepreneurial spirit in his blood. With the Linguist support off course, he has visualized his vision of creating a hotel group. His business success is very inspiring. He is diligent and he inspires me to be the same. “Success through diligence” is one of his mottos. He encourages us (brother, sister and I) to excel academically. It was not without much difficulty but we made it through.

The cookie cutters – The Linguist and The Architect share their DNA with me. I do have certain linguistic skill and I am a dreamer. I was told once that somehow, a person can feel and somehow experienced something that his/ her parents have experienced and learned. For this, I am very grateful because, I have already gotten this DNA and I don’t have to learn certain things since I should and would probably “have” this certain skill or I could learn it faster. Parents do inspire their children and hopefully, one day, I would be able to do the same for my children.
